Gamers need to read

May 28, 2007

I get a lot of private messages when I am in-game asking me about game features. Questions that I should not have to answer if only gamers would READ!

First, there is an in-game help function that can be accessed by typing “L” or “Alt + L”. That already takes care of more than half of the the question right there especially the ones about gameplay.

Second, people asking me what to do with certain quests when the quest description clearly states what needs to be done. There are very few quests that do not have the coordinates for the NPC that you need to talk to. So far I only count 2 such quests.

Third, people ask me where X monster is. The quest description gives you a general idea of where the monster should be. Hunt for them! I also go through these quests and I bust my ass looking for these monsters. That’s part of the challenge people!

If gamers could only learn how to read, then the PMs I get in game would be the ones greeting me, those wishing me a nice day, bug reports, name violations, etc. In short I’d be getting community messages and the reports that matter.

If gamers learn how to read it would make life so much easier.

Missing the point

April 30, 2007

I’ve not been alone in noticing this, but people seem to be missing some very important points about Perfect World.

  1. Pot spam. If you intend to rely on spamming healing potions to win battles then you’re in for a very rude awakening. In Perfect World you must choose your opponents and your angle of attack very carefully. A mistake could lead to a mob and a quick death.
  2. Pure stat builds. There is no such thing as a pure stat build in Perfect World. Builds in Perfect World are built around what equipment you intend your character to use.
  3. Grinding for levels. One of the most unwise things to do in Perfect World is to repeatedly hunt down monsters solely for the purposes of levelling. There are a lot of quests that tell you to hunt a certain number of a specific type of monsters and then gives you Experience points for finishing that task. Why continuously hunt monsters if all you need to do is finish your quests?
  4. Farming for Skills. This is like grinding for levels, but that mindset does not apply here either. To gain skills you have to meet certain requirements:
    1. Character level
    2. Character Cultivation level
    3. Available Soul Points
    4. Available funds

By far the easiest way of getting Soul Points is the easiest way you get Experience Points, you finish your quests.

  5. Quests are optional. No, just no.
  6. Limited character customization. No, in this game you can look unique. The armors may look the same at certain levels, but you have the option of showing formal clothes without sacrificing the protection given to you by your armor. Facial details and body details can all be customized to a certain detail to make a character that will look unique.

These are all signs that people are brining the mentality of other games into Perfect World. Let me tell you that that is the wrong way to go about it. Comparisons to other games will merely cause confusion. Take the game as it is and play within it and you shall see.

Rights, opinions, et al.

April 18, 2007

The biggest complaints of board users, and I speak from my experience, is when moderators stop them from “speaking their minds.” They complain that they have a right to post their opinions freely. Here’s the problem with that way of thinking: not all opinions can be spoken freely.

Why is that? One of my favorite quotes is from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.:

The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins.

You know what that means? It means that you have the right to do as you wish for as long as it does not infringe upon the rights of others. This is the prime rule I follow when moderating a board. You are not in isolation if you are a member of a board. There are hundreds, sometimes thousands, of other people using the same boards. Just because you have something to say doesn’t mean that you should automatically be allowed to say it.

GM Tristan keeps repeating that it is all about R – E – S – P – E – C – T. That’s what it all boils down to actually.

Calm before the storm

April 2, 2007

After the initial flurry of violators and spammers, the Perfect World Message Board seems to have calmed down. From experience this is merely the calm before the storm. I am pretty sure that it will start to become really hectic when Closed Beta Starts.

It is good to note, however, that we have few repeat offenders and that people on the boards are starting to police themselves. We moderator will have to depend a lot on offense reports in the future when the community increases in size and when new posts start to exceed 2 pages worth.

I’m savoring the calm for as long as it will last.
